The finished shell of a building leaves many opportunities for architectural design. As architects practicing in an environment with many existing buildings, we are often confronted with renovations of existing spaces to meet a new need. Our philosophy focuses heavily on the reuse and reorganization of existing structures, rather than total demolition and new construction. While alterations and additions should harmonize with the architecture of original buildings, we stress that an alteration enhance the architecture rather than replicate it. Creating a work of synthesis and complexity is preferred to falsely replicating historic architecture.
