This alteration to a turn of the century eclectic bungalow not only provides new and remodeled spaces for an acclaimed San Francisco artist and her husband, but also serves as an artistic expression of the couples design sensibilities and love of art and sculpture. Portions of the existing house are treated as found objects and the finished product is treated as a collage, in much the same way the client's artwork employs such artifacts. A third story is added for living space to capture panoramic ocean and park views. The house, while doubling in size, keeps all the sleeping spaces and a double height library on the first floor and leaves the entire top floor open for entertaining except for a small nest space for reading located in a new copper tower. The library serves as the structural and spatial center of the house as well as a place to display art. The books are supported on steel shelves that are supported by a four-sided, steel, braced frame. The library space flows into the dining space above and has a ceiling that is vaulted with exposed woof framing.
