While the typical split-level configuration of Henry Doelger’s Westlake Homes offer the possibility of an interesting section, the levels in these houses are often spatially segregated so that the experience of the building’s section at the interior is absent. The intention of this project, besides providing a new family room, master suite, and remodeled kitchen, was to spatially connect all the levels of the house through the insertion of a light-filled circulation spine at the center of the plan. This space connects a total of five levels. Virtually every space in the house opens to this daylighted core, offering interesting light patterns, views and paths into and through the entire house.
