Locus Architecture was engaged to guide the transformation of a historic church sanctuary in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, combining careful stewardship of the existing building with a contemporary approach to worship, music, and community gathering. The work grew from long-term engagement with the congregation and evolved into a comprehensive reinvention of the sanctuary experience.

At the heart of the project was a desire to reveal and celebrate the original architecture of the space. A suspended ceiling was removed to restore the room’s volume and structure, dramatically improving both spatial quality and acoustic performance. Locus led the integration of modern systems within the historic fabric, coordinating closely with a local HVAC contractor, a nationally recognized organ builder, and an acoustic consultant to ensure seamless performance for worship and music.

The chancel was redesigned and extended into the body of the congregation, creating a more inclusive and participatory liturgical environment. Throughout design, Locus facilitated an extensive collaborative process using color studies, annotated drawings, furnishings scenarios, and immersive visualizations to help the congregation explore possibilities and make informed decisions.

Particular attention was given to seating and flexibility. The sanctuary needed to support a wide range of uses, from intimate family ceremonies to large public performances. Multiple configurations were studied, balancing preservation of existing pews with the adaptability of individual seating. A hybrid solution ultimately provided flexibility, accessibility, and visual continuity without exceeding budgetary constraints.

The completed sanctuary supports diverse liturgical, musical, and community functions while remaining welcoming, accessible, and acoustically refined. The project reflects Locus Architecture’s commitment to thoughtful collaboration, technical coordination, and design that honors history while serving contemporary needs
