Locus Architecture’s partnership with Birchwood Cafe grew from a shared commitment to community, sustainability, and thoughtful design. Owner Tracy Singleton first connected with the Locus team through the firm’s 2x2 salon-style discussion series, which brings together local leaders to explore ideas around culture, place, and values. Joined by farmer Greg Reynolds and moderated by Mark Wheat of 89.3 The Current, the conversation focused on local food systems and sustainable farming, setting the foundation for a collaborative relationship rooted in common purpose.

The renovation project was shaped through close collaboration with Birchwood’s staff and patrons, addressing operational needs such as service efficiency, maintenance, and construction phasing. The original 1926 creamery building was fully renovated and expanded while preserving the neighborhood character that has defined the cafe since it opened in 1995. Improvements included an expanded kitchen, new restrooms, and the addition of a Community Room that was carefully integrated into the existing structure to support gatherings, events, and shared use.

Birchwood Cafe is widely recognized as more than a restaurant. It serves as a community hub and a longtime advocate for sustainable food practices. In response, Locus incorporated numerous sustainable strategies throughout the project, including solar panels, daylight harvesting, recycled materials, and locally sourced elements such as Wood From the Hood tabletops. An on-site organic garden further reinforces the cafe’s connection to local food systems.

Guided by the concept of “dirt to dirt,” the project reflects a holistic approach to architecture that supports environmental stewardship, the local economy, and community life.
