Churchill Street began as an unremarkable, slab on grade former hardware store, a generic suburban structure with little architectural presence. The client envisioned something entirely different: a welcoming, daylight filled restaurant that would serve as both a neighborhood destination and an expression of care for community and food. With an accelerated ten month timeline and the need for a zoning variance, the project moved quickly from concept to construction.
Locus Architecture reconfigured the open retail shell into a highly functional restaurant layout, organizing a large commercial kitchen at the rear, a central bar and service area, and two dining rooms at the front. New windows and skylights flood the interior with natural light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the day. The former outdoor retail zone has been transformed into a flexible dining patio, equipped with skylights and radiant heaters that extend seasonal use well beyond summer months.
Interior design elements were carefully selected to balance comfort and craftsmanship, including custom pendant lighting, a richly detailed tiled bar, curated furnishings, and intimate banquettes that encourage lingering meals. Salvaged materials play a meaningful role in the space, most notably a restored 1917 schoolhouse door that forms the entry to a private dining room, adding a sense of history and character.
Today, Churchill Street pairs thoughtful architectural transformation with an experience rooted in hospitality and shared values. The restaurant embraces composting, local sourcing, and partnerships with Minnesota hunger relief organizations, offering great food in an environment shaped by intention, warmth, and community connection.
