The transformation of this former kennel building into a vibrant multi arts facility began with strong ambitions for community centered creative space. What was once defined by noise and odor now supports three thriving arts organizations, including FOCI Minnesota Center for Glass Arts, Red Eye Theater, and Threads Dance Project.
FOCI Minnesota Center for Glass Arts—Minnesota’s only non profit public access glass studio and education center—brings a unique programmatic anchor to the project. Established in 2009, FOCI offers a full curriculum in glassblowing, flameworking, kiln forming, neon, casting, and more; supports a diverse community of makers; and engages thousands annually through classes, demonstrations, exhibitions, and its onsite Marketplace Gallery.
Design work began with research trips to leading glass studios and institutions in Seattle, informing the planning of FOCI’s hot shop, cold shop, and gallery. The immense column free north hall—spanning nearly seventy five feet—was reimagined to accommodate the needs of multiple tenants while preserving openness where possible. Access to north light, new restrooms, structural upgrades, and phased work around remaining tenants shaped the architectural strategy.
A future rooftop farm introduced additional structural complexity, requiring reinforcement of the south building’s precast roof system. With careful coordination, the project now supports a dynamic arts ecosystem designed for long term creativity, learning, and community engagement.
