The Lebanon Hills Mountain Bike Trailhead serves as a durable and welcoming gateway to one of the Twin Cities’ most popular mountain bike destinations. Located within Dakota County’s largest regional park, the trailhead anchors the western sector and provides direct access to more than 12 miles of singletrack trails serving riders of all skill levels.
The project includes a new parking lot, picnic pavilion, restrooms, and a rain garden, all designed to withstand heavy, year round use. Cost effective and resilient materials such as concrete masonry, steel, and ipe wood were selected for their durability and low maintenance, while being carefully arranged to create a modern, approachable facility that fits comfortably within the park setting.
A key feature of the design is a collaboration with artist Kerry Dikken of Blasted Art. Mountain bike tire treads were sandblasted directly into the CMU walls, transforming a utilitarian material into a site specific work of art that reflects the culture and energy of the biking community.
Visitors consistently praise the trailhead’s clean restrooms, clear organization, and convenient parking, noting how the amenities enhance both pre and post ride experiences. The pavilion and surrounding spaces function as natural gathering points for families, cycling groups, and volunteers, reinforcing the trailhead’s role as a social hub as well as a service facility.
Together, the trailhead and trail network have helped position Lebanon Hills as a signature mountain biking destination in the metro area. The project reflects Locus Architecture’s commitment to durable public design that balances function, user experience, and expressive architectural identity.
