Single family home, Architecture

Located in the historic Lake Harriet Farmstead neighborhood, this home sits among a collection of early cabins that were relocated onto compact urban lots as the area developed. After eight years in their small residence, a growing family chose to remain in their cherished neighborhood and pursue a transformative renovation rather than relocate. The project offered an opportunity to reimagine the existing house while respecting its context, scale, and community character.
Locus Architecture collaborated closely with the homeowners, one of whom is a landscape designer, resulting in a fully integrated approach to architecture and site design. The homeowners also served as general contractors, bringing their professional expertise into a highly collaborative process. Together, the team sought to demonstrate how thoughtful, innovative design can elevate small scale residential projects within dense urban environments.
The renovation carefully orients the main living spaces to frame views of the landscape, strengthening the connection between indoors and outdoors despite the tight lot constraints. The home’s location along a tree lined boulevard near Lyndale Farmstead Park allows views toward Lakeview Cemetery and evening sunsets. Approaching from the street, guests are guided by a terraced rain garden and stone path to a welcoming facade of wood and glass. Natural materials, a shallow hip roof, and a warm, site inspired color palette help the home blend seamlessly into its surroundings.

Outdoor spaces are layered and multifunctional, from a front entry terrace and pergola to a generous rear deck that steps with the site’s natural topography. These areas support both intimate gatherings and larger neighborhood events. Inside, centralized circulation organizes the open plan and creates a strong visual and physical connection to the backyard. A new detached alley facing garage further reinforces the home’s relationship to the neighborhood, providing a shared setting for informal community interaction.
