Thompson County Park is a forward looking master planning effort that builds on one of Dakota County’s most cherished natural landscapes. Centered on Thompson Lake and a rich network of wooded trails, the plan seeks to enhance recreational access while reinforcing the park’s connection to the broader regional trail system. The park’s trails link directly to the River to River Greenway, extending north to Kaposia Park in South St. Paul and east to the Mississippi River Greenway.
Locus Architecture collaborated as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop the park’s comprehensive master plan through schematic design. The planning process focused on strengthening the park’s role as both a neighborhood destination and a regional gateway. Proposed improvements include a pollinator promenade, sledding hill, amphitheater, nature based play area, and expanded trail networks that support year round use while preserving the site’s natural character.
A key component of the plan is an addition to an existing building, reimagined as a flexible hub for park users and the Greenway network. The addition is envisioned to accommodate a range of functions, including event space, classrooms, offices, visitor information, and a Greenway trailhead, creating a welcoming arrival point for both local and regional visitors.
The building addition with sustainability in mind. Strategies include enhanced daylighting, coordinated upgrades to existing and new mechanical and lighting systems, thoughtful material selection, and preservation of the original fireplace—supporting Dakota County’s long term sustainability goals while honoring the park’s character.
