Locus Architecture partnered closely with Vinje Lutheran Church to guide a comprehensive master planning and renovation effort grounded in deep congregational engagement. Before design work began, Locus worked with the twelve-member Property Committee and Church Council to shape a participatory planning process. This included facilitated listening sessions, customized questionnaires, and opportunities for individual reflection, ensuring that voices from across the congregation informed the future of the church.
The planning process concluded with a celebratory reflection on Vinje’s history, including a presentation tracing the congregation’s long presence within the community and its evolution across multiple church homes. Insights gathered through this process were carefully synthesized into a comprehensive Master Plan that aligned future architectural interventions with the church’s Mission Statement and values.
Following master planning, Locus developed construction documents for a phased approach to renovation. Phase One focused on restoring and updating the iconic circular Sanctuary, preserving its distinctive character while enhancing function, comfort, and accessibility. Phase Two addressed renovation of the remaining 30,000 square feet of the building, along with the addition of 4,500 square feet of light-filled gathering space designed to foster connection and hospitality.
Design decisions balanced respect for the existing building’s strong architectural identity with a desire to soften its fortress-like qualities. New interventions introduce openness, warmth, and visual connection, creating spaces that feel more welcoming and inclusive. Throughout the project, architecture served as a direct expression of Vinje Lutheran Church’s mission, transforming the building into a more inviting and community-centered place of worship.
