The Walker West Music Academy renovation reimagined a former adult daycare facility as a vibrant cultural hub dedicated to performance, learning, and community healing. As the oldest African American–owned community music school in the region, Walker West required a space that could support its expanding mission while remaining welcoming, flexible, and rooted in the historic Rondo neighborhood.

Locus Architecture provided comprehensive services from predesign through construction administration, beginning with an intensive programming and feasibility process. Detailed analysis of instructional schedules, space utilization, user groups, and adjacencies revealed opportunities for shared and flexible use, allowing the full program to be accommodated within the existing 18,600 square foot footprint. This early work avoided the need for a costly 3,000 square foot addition while strengthening the academy’s operational efficiency.
Strategic renovation and systems coordination transformed the building into a high performance educational environment. Teaching studios, classrooms, and offices were carefully designed with enhanced acoustic separation, supported by a “push and pull” acoustics mitigation strategy along corridors. HVAC, lighting, and advanced A/V systems were integrated to serve instructional, administrative, and performance needs. A creative resource management approach increased the volume of the performance hall by excavating downward rather than adding height, yielding significant cost savings.

Phased construction allowed instruction to continue throughout renovation. The project also revitalized Walker West’s urban presence through bold graphics and murals that celebrate cultural identity and announce the building’s renewed purpose. Together, architecture, programming, and collaboration shaped a resilient, mission driven facility that supports creativity, connection, and long term community impact.
