Willow Brooke Farm transforms an active 80 acre farmstead and vineyard into a carefully composed event destination that balances rural character with contemporary functionality. Working within an existing agricultural setting west of Red Wing, Locus Architecture shaped a collection of new and adapted spaces that allow the site to host gatherings while preserving the integrity of its working landscape.
The project brings together a lightly preserved farmhouse, a flexible gathering space housed within the upper level of a restored 1873 barn, a renovated shed repurposed as an outdoor pavilion, and a new dining and reception hall capable of hosting up to 300 guests. The new structure includes a commercial kitchen and modern restroom facilities, supporting large events without compromising the site’s agricultural roots. A modern interpretation of vernacular forms allows new construction to sit comfortably alongside historic buildings, reinforcing continuity across generations.
A modest budget encouraged a resourceful design approach, prioritizing reuse, selective renovation, and material efficiency. The rural location introduced additional challenges, including coordination with local authorities, fire safety considerations, and infrastructure planning in the absence of municipal water and utilities. These constraints informed a pragmatic yet expressive architectural response.
While the open landscape offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, buildings are carefully oriented to frame specific vistas, emphasizing the layered patterns of fields, vineyards, and rolling terrain. An inner courtyard creates a sheltered, intimate outdoor space protected from wind and weather. Together, the variety of indoor and outdoor settings allows guests to tailor their experience to season, time of day, and desired level of rustic engagement, elevating Willow Brooke Farm into a versatile and memorable destination.
